Sierra Nevada from Granada: summer hiking or winter skiing?

Updated October 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Rocky Sierra Nevada ridges with walking paths and small patches of snow

Sierra Nevada changes activity completely with the season. Winter visitors mainly use Pradollano as a ski base; summer visitors come for mountain paths, lifts and high-altitude views. Snow dates, lift openings and trail conditions are variable, so a calendar month alone never guarantees the experience.

Summer: choose the altitude first

The San Juan valley hike towards 3,000 metres explores old glacial valleys above 2,500 metres. That is a high-mountain day, not a city walk with a better view. Ask about distance, ascent, surface, transport, required clothing and the cancellation plan before booking.

Sierra Nevada’s official resort operated a gondola and chairlift from Pradollano towards 3,000 metres between 11 July and 23 August in 2026. Those dates describe one summer programme, not a permanent annual timetable. Outside the operating window, plan a route that does not depend on a lift.

For an easier introduction, Los Cahorros near Monachil offers a lower canyon landscape with suspension bridges. The guided Los Cahorros hike with return transfer is more suitable when you want a defined route without committing to the high peaks, though narrow passages and bridges still deserve a careful look at the current activity description.

Winter: skiing is only one option

Pradollano is the resort settlement, reached from Granada by the A-395. Skiing requires a lift pass and equipment; lessons and rental are separate decisions, so check exactly what a package includes. Non-skiers can consider resort snow activities or a guided snowshoe hike in Sierra Nevada, subject to snow and operator confirmation.

Do not treat a winter hiking path like its summer version. In winter snow and ice demand extra caution, and the highest mountains are terrain for people with previous mountaineering experience.

What should you book?

Choose the high San Juan valley hike for fitness, altitude and open mountain scenery; Los Cahorros for a lower and more structured walking day; skiing for a full resort day; snowshoes when snow exists but downhill skiing is not the aim. In every season, confirm the weather decision, equipment list and meeting point with the operator.

The city and the mountain can have very different conditions on the same day. Carrying a light city layer is not the same as being equipped for altitude. For most summer visitors new to mountain walking, Los Cahorros is the gentler first choice; experienced hikers can consider the high route. Compare other day trips from Granada.
