Granada tourist train: is the hop-on hop-off ticket worth it?
Updated October 14, 2026 · 5 min read
Granada’s tourist train is most useful as a link between hills and distant sights, not as a faster substitute for walking through the centre. The city is compact at street level but the Alhambra and Albaicín make repeated climbs tiring. Whether the ticket is worth it depends on how many of those climbs it replaces.
What the ticket actually gives you
The Granada City Train 1- or 2-day hop-on hop-off ticket allows repeated boarding while the selected ticket remains valid. The official route connects the Alhambra area, Plaza Nueva, the Cathedral, Albaicín viewpoints, Realejo and central stops. A recorded audio guide is available in 12 languages, plus children’s channels in Spanish and English.
This is road transport, so traffic and city events affect it. The operator gives an approximate frequency of 30–45 minutes and a complete circuit of about 1 hour 20 minutes. A missed train can therefore cost more time than walking between two nearby central stops.
The current Alhambra limitation
The operator currently states that stop 1 at the Alhambra ticket offices is out of service until further notice. That notice can change, and another Alhambra-area stop may still operate, but you must inspect the live map on the day rather than assume the printed route is unchanged.
The train ticket is not an Alhambra admission ticket and does not protect a timed Nasrid Palaces entry. Leave a generous margin and use the official app’s live position if you plan to approach a fixed entry time by train.
Who gets good value
The 1-day ticket works well for travellers who want to combine the Alhambra slope, an Albaicín viewpoint and the centre without several uphill walks. It can also help families needing breaks and visitors with limited walking stamina. The operator says its vehicles are wheelchair accessible, but confirm availability and boarding at the intended stops before relying on it.
The 2-day ticket makes sense only if you will use the route on both days. It adds little when day two is devoted entirely to the Alhambra or a guided walking tour. A single non-hop-on circuit is better if you want orientation and audio commentary without planning stops.
When it is not worth it
Skip it if your day stays around Cathedral, Royal Chapel, Plaza Nueva and lower Albaicín; those places are better understood on foot. Also skip it when a tight timetable cannot absorb a 30–45-minute wait. The vehicle’s narrow-street ride is part of the experience, but it is not a sightseeing bus with uninterrupted panoramic views.
For most first-time visitors, buy one day only and use it for the steepest, most separated stops. Walk the compact centre, and do not use the train as the sole plan for reaching a timed Alhambra entry. Compare the route with more things to do in Granada before buying.
